Tropical Storm the storm is predicted to escalate to a uncommon category five storm as it shifts toward the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening sudden floods and rock falls.

This weather system, which had wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting north-west in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to make landfall by Tuesday, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Warnings of blackouts and structural damage have been released as this storm brings up to 76cm of precipitation and storm surges as high as 4m above typical tides. "Take cover without delay," inhabitants have been urged.

This hurricane is the 13th named hurricane in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in late autumn.

Most Intense Storm Threat

A category five storm is the most powerful category, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

While this storm is expected to weaken to a fourth-level storm before reaching the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it impacts the nation.

Immediate Safety Steps

With storm-force winds and rain anticipated well in advance ahead of it crosses central Jamaica - perhaps encompassing the national capital - warnings state that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"A multi-day period of destructive gusts and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause severe and deadly flash flooding and multiple mudslides," urged climate experts.

The country's head of government the statesman said: "I understand that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: concern is justified.

"Yet the most effective method to handle worry and any apprehension and concern is to remain prepared."

Inhabitants are being advised to secure their homes with sand barriers and timber panels, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Regional Consequences

Warnings are also in effect for areas in Haiti encompassing the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where the hurricane is projected to bring similar effects by the middle of next week.

Landslides already being caused by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to local authorities.

Expected Path

The hurricane is projected to move across Cuba by midweek before passing across the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the Atlantic Ocean.

By the point it makes contact with Cuba, it is forecast to have diminished to a Category 3 hurricane.
